I Am Second

"God, If You're Real..."

Many a man has come to the place in life where every other alternative is blown. His best efforts at juggling problems and managing risk have left him with no way out, no way back, and no way forward. Perhaps he's just sitting alone upstairs in the dark, realizing for the first time in a long time that no answers are down there swimming at the bottom of his drinking glass.

Can You See Me?

It used to just be celebrities who had to live with the possibility that someone could be filming or taking pictures of them at any moment. But today, we're all fairly accustomed to knowing that a camera is likely trained on us at every store entrance, every ATM machine, perhaps even when we're trying to decide whether to run through a yellow light or not.

Watch Me Dance

Maybe it came from having a dad who was never quite satisfied with the performance you put out. Maybe it came from a coach or teacher who would never acknowledge your best effort. Maybe it came from watching championship locker rooms on television, moments after the top prize of their sport had been claimed, only to hear a reporter ask if they thought this team could repeat again next year. C'mon, isn't ANYTHING good enough for you?!

Too Much Information

It just can't be good that every credit card swipe we make, every phone call, every movement, it seems, is on somebody's computer somewhere. We're always watchful these days for privacy loss and identity theft, running our opened mail down the shredder to keep any more info about us from leaking out.

Always and Never

Very few things in life are "always" and "never." Your wife doesn't always tell you how to drive. Your pastor isn't always asking for money. It's not like your kids never do a thing you say.

Ups and Downs

The medal stand. The winner's circle. The trophy presentation ceremony, followed at noon the next day by an open-convertible parade down Main Street. The sports world knows how to tell who's been successful at accomplishing what they set out to do. You can spot the champion by the title he holds.

The Undeluded Truth

Is the Christian faith intellectual nonsense? Are Christians deluded?

"If God exists and takes an interest in the affairs of human beings, his will is not inscrutable," writes Sam Harris about the 2004 tsunami in Letter to a Christian Nation . "The only thing inscrutable here is that so many otherwise rational men and women can deny the unmitigated horror of these events and think this is the height of moral wisdom." [i

What the Bible Says About God: The Providence of God

Let me begin in a prayer. Lord, we thank You this evening for the hope of the resurrection, the reality of Christ's resurrection from the grave, and, therefore, the hope that we have. We ask that we would live in that living hope; and that we would be a people for Your own possession and for Your purposes. We pray in Christ's name. Amen.

What the Bible Says About God: The Trinity

We are going to be looking tonight at the most profound mystery of all, and in doing so we are going to be coming down to the very heart of all things.

What the Bible Says About God: God's Attributes, Part 2

I want to continue on our journey concerning the attributes of God and we talked last time about certain attributes that God has that we do not have, and that are really what we would call incommunicable attributes. These attributes had to do with the fact that God is spirit.

What the Bible Says About God: Introduction to God's Existence

We are going to be looking at the whole area of what the Bible says about God and this is going to the first series in a series of series. I am going to be looking at what the Bible says about God; what the Bible says about Christ; and then what it says about the Holy Spirit.

Longing for God and Hearing His Voice, from A.W. Tozer

When I'm asked what writers had the most profound influence on me as a young Christian, I always say there were three, and they continue to influence me today: C. S. Lewis, A. W. Tozer and Francis Schaeffer. In past months I've written about the subject of desire and longing in Augustine, Pascal and C. S. Lewis. Today I want to share from Tozer.
